Many departments find several smaller tents more useful than one large one — they cover multiple sites, deploy with fewer staff, and store more easily. Worth considering before defaulting to the biggest option.
Compliance, safety and accessibility
Fire code
You will hold your own tents to the same standard you enforce. All our commercial tents are NFPA 701 certified and ship with a Tent Identification and Warning label. Our guide to tent permit requirements covers the underlying code framework, including the IFC provisions most jurisdictions adopt.
Anchoring on public surfaces
Municipal installs are frequently on asphalt, concrete or turf where staking is prohibited or impossible — and where irrigation and buried utilities are a genuine hazard. Ballast anchoring is usually the answer; our guide to hard-surface anchoring covers weights and method.
Before any staked install on public ground, use your locate service. Driving a stake through buried electrical is a serious incident, not an inconvenience.
Wind
Public events mean crowds you do not control. Establish in writing who has authority to clear a tent and at what measured wind speed, and make sure staff on site know it. Our guide to wind action plans covers how to build one.
Accessibility

Is it cheaper to buy than rent?
For departments holding several events a year, almost always — and ownership means the equipment is available during an emergency when rental inventory in your region is spoken for.
How quickly can equipment deploy in an emergency?
Owned equipment deploys as fast as your staff can move it. If you are buying with emergency response in mind, consider storage location, transport, and whether your crew can install without specialist equipment. Frame tent jacks reduce the number of people needed substantially.
How long will tents last in municipal use?
Longer than in rental service, since deployment is less frequent. The controlling factor is storage — a top packed damp will mildew regardless of how little it was used. See our guide to tent top lifespan and care.
