Quick answer: Sweep the floor with a soft-bristled commercial broom to remove all grit, then damp-mop it with a well-wrung microfiber flat mop using either a no-wax floor cleaner or a mix of 1 cup of ammonia per 1 gallon of warm water. Do this before and after every event, and never pour liquid directly onto the floor, because water that seeps into the seams can weaken the panel adhesives over time.
The before-and-after-event routine
- Sweep thoroughly. Remove all loose debris, grit and dust before any liquid touches the floor. Use a commercial-grade, soft-bristled broom. Dust acts like sandpaper under dancers’ shoes and micro-scratches the polyurethane wear layer, so never skip this step.
- Damp-mop with an approved solution. Use a microfiber flat-mop system and wring the mop out thoroughly. The goal is to lift dirt, footprints and light stickiness without leaving water on the surface or in the seams.
Products for specific problems
Daily washing on high-traffic floors
Bona Luxury Vinyl Floor Cleaner. Dries quickly, leaves no residue, does not dull the finish and protects the polyurethane layer.
Restoring shine on a dull, heavily rented floor
Mop & Glo 3-in-1. Buffs to a glossy finish and fills microscopic surface scuffs.
Black heel marks and scuffs
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Spot-clean the mark, then rinse the area with clean water immediately to remove the abrasive residue.
Tape, gum and sticky spills
Goo Be Gone. Apply directly to dissolve tape adhesive, gum or stubborn food spills without stripping the vinyl or loosening the tile adhesives.
Periodic deep cleaning
Oreck Commercial 550MC Orbiter with soft white buffing pads. The orbital motion scrubs and buffs without high-impact scratching or lifting edges. Always test on a single detached tile first to confirm the chemical and pressure are safe for your floor.
Protect the seams. Dance floor panels are highly water-resistant, but the floor has perimeter and joint seams. Never pour buckets of cleaning solution onto the floor and never leave standing water. Use a damp, well-wrung microfiber mop or a machine that picks up the liquid immediately. Water that seeps underneath can slowly degrade backing adhesives over the years.
