Beyond Tent 20x40 Classic Series West Coast Frame Tent — Dallas storm field test, April 2025

Field Report: 20x40 West Coast Frame Tent vs. a Dallas Severe Storm, Partially Installed

On the night of April 18, 2025, one of our 20'x40' Classic Series West Coast Frame Tents was in the middle of setup at a site in Dallas, Texas when a severe weather system moved through North Texas. The Dallas Morning News reported the day before that the storm system could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph across the region, citing National Weather Service forecast data for the Easter weekend (Dallas Morning News, April 17, 2025). On site, conditions were estimated at 35+ mph sustained wind via a local weather app reading, with steady rain.

Here's the part that makes this worth publishing: the tent was not in its finished, fully rated configuration when the wind hit.

  • Frame: partially installed
  • Tent top: fully installed
  • Sidewalls: not installed
  • Anchoring: staked in 6 of the 12 total leg positions

We captured 12 seconds of video during the worst of it — not because that's all the tent endured (the full weather event lasted considerably longer), but because that's the window we happened to have a camera running for.

What this does — and doesn't — tell you

This is a real, unscripted field condition, not a lab test or a manufacturer spec claim, and we're not presenting it as one. It shows the frame and top holding their shape under real wind loading while short of full anchoring and without sidewalls attached. It is not a recommendation to skip stakes, plates, or sidewalls in real conditions — our own anchoring and setup guides exist because full anchoring is what the tent is rated and warrantied for, and that's what we recommend for every real event, every time. What this test actually demonstrates is a margin of structural performance beyond the minimum installed state — a useful data point, not a substitute for following the setup instructions.

If you're evaluating tent structures for events in wind-prone regions, this is the kind of real-world performance data we think is worth publishing — with the caveats intact, not smoothed over.
