If you've shopped for a commercial tent or sidewalls, you've likely seen "blockout" listed as a vinyl spec right next to the ounce weight. It's easy to skim past, but it describes a real, functional difference in how the material behaves once it's up over a live event — not just a marketing label.
Blockout vinyl is opaque: it has a coating or additional layer that stops light from passing through the material in either direction. Translucent vinyl is the opposite — it's manufactured to let diffused daylight pass through, which is why older-style pole tents and some budget canopies use it.
Both are typically the same base material — PVC-coated polyester — so blockout isn't a separate fabric so much as a different finish applied during manufacturing. That's also why blockout vinyl usually runs slightly heavier per square yard than a translucent version of the same product line.

Translucent panels aren't obsolete — they show up intentionally in cathedral window sidewalls and some tent liners, where the goal is specifically to let soft light through a defined section rather than the whole structure. If a sidewall or tent top listing doesn't explicitly say "blockout," ask the seller directly — the ounce weight alone won't tell you. A heavier translucent panel can still let light through; it's the coating and finish, not just the thickness, that determines opacity.
