Inflatable Safety Protocols
Beyond Tent provides these safety guidelines to help rental operators and event organizers deploy commercial inflatables safely, in compliance with applicable standards, and in a manner that protects participants, operators, and the equipment itself.
All commercial inflatables sold by Beyond Tent are intended for use by trained rental operators — not for unsupervised residential use. Following these protocols is a condition of safe and responsible operation.
1. ASTM Standards — Commercial Inflatable Safety
The primary safety standard for commercial amusement inflatables in the United States is ASTM F2374 (Standard Practice for Design, Manufacture, and Operation of Inflatable Amusement Devices). Additional ASTM standards apply to specific types of inflatables.
Key standards:
- ASTM F2374 — Design, manufacture, and operation of inflatable amusement devices (applies to bounce houses, slides, combos, and similar products)
- ASTM F2917 — Additional requirements for inflatable amusement devices
- ASTM F2156 — Patron activity devices (interactive inflatables)
What ASTM compliance means for rental operators:
- Commercial inflatables must be operated within the manufacturer's stated weight limits, capacity limits, and age/height requirements
- Operators are responsible for inspecting inflatables before each use
- Operators must provide active supervision during all use — ASTM F2374 requires operator presence at all times the unit is occupied
- Many states require inflatables used at commercial events to be registered with the state, inspected by a state-authorized inspector, and carry a visible inspection sticker
Check your state's requirements. States including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, and California have specific annual inspection and registration requirements for commercial inflatables. Contact your state's labor department or amusement ride inspection office for current requirements.
2. Capacity and Weight Limits
Every commercial inflatable has a manufacturer-specified maximum occupancy and maximum user weight limit. These limits are safety requirements — exceeding them creates risk of structural failure, injury, and voiding of your equipment warranty.
Rules for capacity management:
- Never allow the number of users inside the unit to exceed the manufacturer's stated maximum occupancy
- Never allow a user to exceed the manufacturer's stated maximum weight limit
- Separate users by age and size where specified — do not mix very small children with older, larger users on the same unit unless the unit is specifically designed for mixed-age use
- Post the unit's maximum occupancy and weight limit visibly at the entrance to the unit
- Assign a trained attendant to count users and enforce limits at all times the unit is in use
3. Supervision Requirements
Commercial inflatables must be actively supervised at all times by a trained adult operator. Unattended inflatables are one of the leading causes of inflatable-related injuries.
Operator responsibilities:
- Position yourself where you can see all entry/exit points and the interior of the unit at all times
- Remove shoes, eyeglasses, and sharp objects from all users before entry
- Remove items from pockets (keys, phones) that could damage the vinyl interior
- Do not allow food, beverages, or gum inside the unit
- Stop use immediately if you observe reckless behavior (rough play, climbing the exterior, etc.)
- Never allow users inside a unit that is deflating or has lost power to the blower
- Never leave the unit unattended while it is occupied or inflated
4. Weather Restrictions
Commercial inflatables must be deflated and secured when weather conditions create a safety hazard. Weather is the leading cause of inflatable incidents.
Wind:
- Do not operate inflatables when wind speeds exceed 15–20 mph (check manufacturer specifications for the specific unit — some larger units have lower wind thresholds)
- When sustained wind or gusts reach this threshold, remove all users immediately and deflate the unit
- An inflated unit acts as a sail in high wind — it can become airborne or tip over even when anchored
- Check local wind forecasts before every event
Lightning and thunder:
- Remove all users from the unit immediately at the first sign of lightning or thunder
- Deflate the unit during a lightning event — an inflated unit is a large, elevated target in an open field
- Wait a minimum of 30 minutes after the last observed lightning before re-inflating and resuming operation
Rain:
- Wet vinyl surfaces inside inflatables become extremely slippery and create a serious injury risk
- Deflate or suspend use during rain for dry-use inflatables
- Water slides and wet units are designed for wet use — follow specific guidelines for water units
Extreme heat:
- Dark-colored vinyl surfaces can become extremely hot in direct summer sun — check surface temperature before allowing use
- Provide shade over the unit where possible during peak heat hours
- Ensure adequate hydration for users, particularly young children
5. Anchoring and Setup Requirements
Anchoring on grass/soft surfaces:
- Use heavy-duty steel stakes (minimum 18" length for standard units; 24"+ for larger units) at every anchor point
- Drive stakes fully into the ground at a 45-degree angle in the direction of tension
- Attach all D-ring anchor points to stakes using the provided straps — do not skip anchor points
- Call 811 (Dig Safe) before driving stakes on any property you do not own or haven't previously verified for underground utilities
Anchoring on hard surfaces:
- Use sandbags or water weights at every anchor point — minimum weight per anchor point per manufacturer specifications
- A general guideline is 150–250 lbs per anchor point for standard bounce houses; larger units require more
- Sandbags must be fully filled and securely attached to the D-ring, not simply placed near the unit
Setup clearance requirements:
- Maintain a minimum 6-foot clearance on all sides of the unit from fences, buildings, trees, vehicles, and other structures
- Do not position the unit under power lines or overhead obstructions
- Ensure the blower intake is not obstructed — the blower must have clear airflow at all times
- Position the unit on a relatively flat surface — slopes of more than 5 degrees create instability
6. Inspection Checklist — Before Every Use
Inspect your inflatable before inflating for each event. Do not use a unit with any of the following conditions:
- Tears, punctures, or holes in the vinyl
- Damaged or detached seams
- Damaged or missing anchor D-rings
- Damaged blower or blower housing
- Frayed or cut blower power cord
- Mold, mildew, or significant soiling on interior surfaces
- Missing or illegible safety/capacity labels
- Any structural component that does not perform as designed
Repair any issues before placing the unit into service. Minor vinyl repairs can be made with inflatable repair patches and vinyl adhesive. Contact Beyond Tent for parts availability.
7. After-Use Care and Storage
- Clean the unit after every use — wipe down interior surfaces with mild soap and water; do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners on vinyl
- Allow the unit to dry completely before folding and storage — storing a damp unit creates mold and mildew
- Fold and store per the manufacturer's instructions — improper folding can crease and weaken vinyl over time
- Store in a temperature-controlled environment when possible — extreme cold or heat shortens the service life of vinyl
- Inspect and service the blower motor periodically — clean the blower intake screen and check for debris
8. State-Specific Regulatory Notes
Inflatable amusement device regulations vary significantly by state. The following states are known to have active inspection and registration programs for commercial inflatables as of 2025:
- New Jersey — Annual inspection required; state-issued inspection stickers must be displayed
- Pennsylvania — Annual inspection required; permits required for commercial operation
- Florida — Annual inspection required for commercial operators
- Texas — Inspection and insurance requirements for commercial amusement operators
- California — Inspection requirements under the California Amusement Rides Safety Act
- Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia — Additional state-specific requirements
